As owner of Designtree Studios, I have designed and built award winning millwork and cabinetry for customers in the Central Texas area for over forty years.
I began my passion for design and woodworking at an early age while working with my grandfather in his cabinet shop. He taught me the use of hand tools, and the patience required to start and finish a job. I’m sure I tested his patience as well!
My passion for working with wood continued through my education at The University of Houston, where I studied art and architecture. After leaving Houston, I was drawn back to Austin, where I found that I was happier behind a hammer instead of a drafting table. My brother and I started Rountree Construction Co., which was involved in numerous award winning projects; from the Historical District to condominium projects in the Hill Country. We always excelled to be the best.
In 2003, I created Designtree Studios so I could focus more on woodworking. I incorporated a CNC machine for the cabinet and furniture side of my business. This has allowed me to to use not only wood but also metal, plastic, and ceramics into my projects. In 2015, we installed a finishing booth complete with the latest in spray finishing systems.
In my spare time my passion is playing guitar. I have performed with various bands in the area, and also volunteer to perform at local churches. Currently I am in the process of building a Dreadnought guitar, and I cannot wait to hear its sound.
I live on a ranch with my beautiful wife Susan, who jokingly comments on my starting more projects. But, in retrospect, that’s how my life has evolved. I have been blessed with many great projects from homes, churches, restaurants and bars to furniture, boats, and musical instruments. I have always been challenged in the world of woodworking, and it has brought me great satisfaction.
